Singapore Diaries - Day 6

Thrilled to see the beautiful birds but really sad because it was the last day of our trip. We started the day with a bitter-sweet feeling. Downed a fresh coffee, hogged on some breakfast and off to the Jurong Bird Park!! This bird park is said to be Asia’s largest bird park with over 5,000 birds across 400 species in a sprawling 20.2 hectare space.

Since Jurong was far away from the main city and it would take us at least an hour or two to reach there. We started off early. Yes, day starts early again. :) By now, it would have been clear that when at Singapore, we always started quite early. Something different about this trip, we never felt enough or exhausted in this fabulous city!! At the bus stand, it had already been some unusual wait today for the bus to arrive. We tried asking a couple of people standing at bus stand on this situation. Just then a bus stopped but no one got inside the bus. To our surprise, the driver opened the door and wished us "Good Morning" and said Have a great day! What positive energy he had. I was just wondering is the environment or the culture that makes the people so positive or is it natural the way it is.

The long ride was finally over and we reached Jurong. It had a similar setup as that of the Zoo and the Night Safari. There were stops and the tram would take you throughout the park with various stops in between. First we took the tram and took a ride throughout the bird park. The internet had advised us not to miss any single bird show. The Jurong bird park has almost all species of birds which would never fail to impress any avian lover. We wanted to make the best use of time and the opportunity we have had to visit here. The first thing was the penguin expedition. They have replicated the cold environment here. The ice, rocks cliffs burrows and pool making envt apt for the penguins. Moving further we saw a wide array of birds from different species. What shocked us was the talking parrots and the colors of birds. Never before had I seen birds as brightly colorful and as beautiful as these.

We were on time for all the amphitheatre shows. At some places the parrots showed their talent flying through hoops and interacting with the audience while in some places there were dangerous and large eagles and vultures. Very different experience indeed. Most of the dangerous and aggressive birds were kept in cages while the rest others were set free with extraordinarily large nets and trees which gives a feeling that there is no captivity at all. We could clearly make out that most of the birds belonged to endangered species. We moved ahead to the waterfall aviary. There was a man made waterfall about 30 mts long and the birds happily roamed around this.

We went to the Pools Amphitheatre where we attended the ‘High flyers show’, this show featured an exhilarating line-up of birds displaying their talents. What really surprised us is the color & beauty of these birds.

We attended one more show which was ‘The King of skies’ where the eagles, vultures and other birds exhibited their talent.

There was a lory laft, which was pretty amazing. They had set up a large suspension bridges where people could walk through and gaze the birds. They let us feed the lories here. They charged a nominal price of $2 per cup of bird feed. 

 

We also saw other birds like mandarin ducks, toucans, hornbills, kingfishers, riverines, ostrich, crown head pigeons and so on.

While there are a number of attractions that keep you busy, you’re also likely to come across a few special adventures, experiences that are truly unique.

There was a spot in the bird park near the exit where they let us hold the birds and click pictures.  We clicked the most memorable photograph of the day here.

Looking me fall in love with the birds the photographer gave me a free picture of mine. What a lovely gesture! This made my day!

All good things must come to an end.. And so did this visit.

We wrapped up our day by afternoon and decided to head back to the hotel to pack our bags.
